Spring has sprung

Let's pretend that the last time I posted wasn't in December. Let's also pretend that this doesn't mean that I've only posted twice, and that therefore my attempt at a blog has once again failed. Let's just pretend okay? Okay.
See? That's why we're friends.

So, yesterday was a national holiday here in Italy - the Festa della Liberazione to be exact (Liberation Day). It's the first time I've experienced a bank holiday in the middle of the week, and I have to say, I think I may actually prefer the Italian system of not moving holidays to a Monday. Yes, it means no 3-day weekends unless the holiday actually falls on a Monday, but it also means that I get a holiday in the middle of the week - meaning work two days, day off, work another two days, weekend. You see how that's much better?

Andrea and I were very good in the morning, cleaning the whole house for about 3 hours. Admirable no? Then we trotted off to a pasticceria called Cristalli di Zucchero (Sugar Crystals) near Circo Massimo. I was informed by Two Romans earlier in the week that the desserts there could rival the patisseries of Paris, so obviously, my sweet tooth practically dragged me to the bakery. As we were on our way to a free outdoor jazz concert, we thought it would be nice to have a little dessert picnic. It turned out to be a brilliant idea.

We arrived at Casa del Jazz, the venue of the concert. Casa del Jazz is basically a huge manor with sprawling grounds surrounding it, filled with palms, pini marittimi, and the like. The musicians were brilliant, all of whom were students of the Conservatorio di Musica of Rome. The audience was made up of all generations - babies to pensioners and more dogs than I could handle (seriously, I'm impressed I didn't steal one). With the sun shining, the live music playing, and of course, our little (DELICIOUS) desserts - I have to say it was an amazing first Italian Liberation Day. It will definitely be one of our favourite haunts during the Summer.

After the concert we went for a little giro in the Garbatella quarter of Rome, but I'll save that for another post, another day. For now, enjoy the pictures :)

Happy Festa della Liberazione!

Beautiful desserts from Cristalli di Zucchero.

Sometimes, that layer of glass makes a more beautiful picture.

These guys were pretty awesome.

Relaxation in the sun.

After the concert.

Classy Italian Pensioners.
My favourite picture of the day. They just looked so effortlessly elegant, I had to ask if I could take their picture.

Until next time...
(which will hopefully be sooner than in another 4 months)

p.s. Ashley Clarke, you are on my hit list. The pensioners above have also agreed to give you a wallop if they spot you.
